The Minghsien Alumni Association In North America

Despite hardships experienced during the change in political power in China, former staff and alumni still cherish fond memories of Ming Hsien School.  In the 1990’s a number of Ming Hsien alumni associations sprang up in Beijing, Shanxi, Sichuan, and Lan Zhou.  In May 1996, a number of Ming Hsien graduates from the United States (“U.S.”) and Canada gathered in Oberlin College, OH, together with many former Oberlin teachers, held the 1st alumni conference, and established the “Ming Hsien Alumni Association in North America” (i.e., “the Ming Hsien Alumni Association”).  With communication gradually re-established, Ming Hsien alumni regained the exuberance they experienced during our student days.

The Ming Hsien Alumni Association held a conference every other year.  Since 1996 seven conferences have been held at different places, both in the U.S. and in China.  The 6th conference was held in 2007 in Taigu,  together with Shanxi Agricultural University celebrating Ming Hsien’s centennial anniversary.  The 7th conference was held in 2008 at Oberlin College in Ohio, witnessing the celebration of centennial anniversary of Oberlin Shansi Memorial Association (“OSMA”).  As noted, Ming Hsien school was established by Dr. H.H. Kung entrusted by Oberlin College.  So, Ming Hsien alumni consider Oberlin College as their second Alma Mater.  Oberlin College sent representatives to Ming Hsien who also served as Ming Hsien’s English teachers.  Ming Hsien students and their Oberlin teachers were intimate friends.  Ming Hsien alumni love the Oberlin teachers and miss those who passed away one after another in the passed years.  The executive secretary of OSMA, Carl Jacobson and Debby Cocco, greatly helped and supported the Ming Hsien Alumni Association from the very beginning.  The Oberlin Archives also support the Ming Hsien Alumni Association activities in different aspects.  In short, the Ming Hsien Alumni Association is intimately related with Oberlin College through OSMA.

The Ming Hsien Alumni Association issues newsletters periodically.  Until October of 2009, 39 issues have been published and distributed to all alumni and related friends not only in the U.S. and Canada, but also to most Ming Hsien alumni in China.  The newsletters serve as a link among alumni, connecting them together and exchange ideas, problems, and old memories.
